What is the Wave of Waste Project?
Wave of Waste is a 5-week project that will use a unique and eye-catching sculpture to engage the public around a conversation about marine waste. The Wave of Waste team will design and construct a replica of sculptor Donna Hiebert ‘s “The Wave” (located on the Halifax waterfront) made entirely out of local marine waste. The aim of the project is to generate community awareness of marine waste through a unique, thought provoking temporary sculpture. This will also provide a fun experience that hopes to inspire ripple effects into the community. |
This project hopes to inspire ripple effects into the community and create greater awareness about marine waste and the damage it does to marine life and the environment.
The Wave of Waste Project will entail four weeks of weekly planning and education workshops . During these workshops, participants will have the opportunity to explore and examine: conservation awareness initiatives, publicity, public engagement, sculpture design, and construction. On June 6th, participants will construct our wave, on the Halifax waterfront, directly beside Hiebert’s. Student participants will become facilitators and information ambassadors as well as “marine waste sculptors”. Community members will also be welcomed to join in the construction. The Wave of Waste project will be an event for both the Ecology Action Centre’s Ocean Week and the 100in1Day festival. |
